7. Germanicus learns statecraft

Gaius Cetellus' father, the most senior Senator apart from the Second Consul, Agrippa arrived on the island and was escorted to the palace with as much courtesy as possible. He was provided with fine rooms and allowed to bath before meeting Octavian.

The meeting was held in Caesar's ceremonial hall with its ornate pillars and sculptures. I stood to Caesar's side as the Senator was escorted into the room. Octavian kept the Senator standing throughout the meeting and rarely rose from his throne-like chair.

After the courtesies were completed, Octavian shammed deep regret as he informed Gaius' father that the lad had confessed to high crimes for which Caesar, in the name of the Senate and the people of Rome, had reluctantly imposed the death sentence. Although Craxus was a warrior of old, his ruddy complexion paled at the news and he pleaded most eloquently for Caesar to show mercy.

"Dear Craxus," said Caesar, "what can I do? The law must be upheld and young Gaius' confession compels me to do my duty. I have thought hard on the matter but cannot find any reasonable grounds for setting aside the laws which I am sworn to uphold."

"Great Caesar," said Craxus, "you are above all ordinary men and the Senate would not think ill of you should you show mercy with such a young man as Gaius."

"My friend," replied Octavian, "I know the Senate would not think ill of me but the people might. I cannot be seen to have one law for the masses and one for the sons of my dearest friends. I have been given no award by the Senate which would justify an amnesty for prisoners or some such act of leniency. Truly, my hands are tied."

"Caesar," said Craxus after pondering for some time the trap which Caesar had set, "I have been sounding out the members of the Senate regarding your obvious divinity and perhaps therein lies a way by which you might be able to spare my dear boy's life."

"I do not understand your meaning, my friend," replied Caesar.

"Noble Caesar," replied Craxus, "I have proposed to the Senators that your divinity should be proclaimed upon the next anniversary of the Divine Julius' death. I could bring that motion forward, say upon my return to Rome, and have you proclaimed a god immediately rather than waiting for almost a year."

"Such an honour!" declared Octavian. "Do you think the Senate would make me a god?"

"Undoubtedly" replied Craxus.

"And you would be the prime sponsor?" asked Octavian.

"It would be an honour, great Caesar," Craxus affirmed.

Octavian finally arose and took Craxus by the arm and walked him to the window and rested his chin in his hand as if pondering this amazing proposition.

"Dear Craxus," Octavian finally said with an amazing display of humility, "if this should come to pass, I could not possibly have a hand raised against your dear son. I should be able, with a clear conscience, to commute his sentence of death to, say, a severe beating and his banishment to our eastern provinces. Yes, that would do. I could send him to Agrippa! Mind you, you would not be able to see him for some time but I shall summon him back to Rome as quickly as circumstances allow. What a splendid solution."

Octavian gave Craxus a hug and ordered wine so that the pact might be sealed.

I watched as the meeting ended with Craxus being urgently dispatched to Rome to honour his part of the bargain.

"Germanicus," said Octavian after Craxus had been sent on his way, "soon I shall be a god and free to do as I please! That stupid but pretty Gaius has served me well. Perhaps you would like to take him the news of his reprieve?"

I saluted Octavian and departed to tell Gaius the news and suddenly realised that this had all been one enormous charade for Octavian had never meant to kill the boy - he had told me so himself. I laughed as the guile with which he had manipulated the situation.

I found Gaius Cetellus in his room looking most despondent.

"Is my father here?" he asked as I entered the room.

"He has been with Caesar but has now left to go back to Rome," I replied.

"Could I not have said good bye to him?" asked Gaius.

"You shall see him soon enough," I said to the puzzled boy. "It seems your life is to be spared in honour of Octavian's being declared divine by the Senate. To mark the occasion, Caesar will commute your sentence. You shall be flogged when the news of Caesar's divinity is brought back here by your father and then you shall be sent to Agrippa to serve in the Eastern provinces until Caesar decides that you might return. That should cheer you up a bit at least."

Gaius looked at me and I watched as his eyes gradually descended to view my groin which was showing its delight at the sight of the pretty young lad before me. His eyes widened as he realised my desire.

"No, please," he whimpered as I slowly stripped off my tunic and approached him.

Sitting beside him, I took Gaius in my arms and gently held him.

"Gaius," I said as gently as possible, "you should learn how to pleasure a man and how to receive pleasure for where you are going it will be expected of you. You will not lose your citizenship but you will be not much greater in status than a slave until you are recalled to Rome. I shall teach you the art of pleasure and, in return, I shall seek Caesar's agreement to your early return to Rome and to my side."

With that pretty speech, I moved one hand to Gaius head and gently pushed it down in the direction of my swollen and rigid organ. While there was a moment's hesitation, a brief sigh signaled his acquiescence and I felt the warmth of his mouth engulf me. For an eternity I had Gaius suck upon me, stopping him only when I approached my climax.

As he went about his lesson, I used my spittle to lubricate my fingers and gradually pushed them into the boy's nether hole. He gave a muffled cry at the moment of entry for he was quite obviously sore from his recent ravishing by myself and Octavian but I took the process easily and eased the discomfort as best I could.

By the time I was ready to explode, I gently pushed Gaius back onto the couch and rested my body upon his. I kissed him and swore my love for him and then lifted his legs to expose the avenue by which that love could best be expressed. He cried out as I entered the lips of his hole and I could see that they were swollen and torn but I proceeded slowly to lessen the pain. I sighed as a pushed the last part of my organ into that delicious, tight hole and leant over and kissed Gaius passionately. Reluctant at first, Gaius started to respond to my tongue's exploration of his mouth and as I began the gently rhythm of rutting, Gaius finally began to moan in delight. His own organ began to rise and I encouraged him to spend his seed in unison with me.

Our lovemaking that afternoon continued unabated for hours and Gaius pledged himself to me as a final act of submission.

As I rose to leave, I had to tell Gaius that our devotion to each other would not dissuade Octavian from punishing the lad nor, I feared, from allowing Antonious and Zoticus to have the pleasure of his charms.

"Gaius, my dear," said I earnestly, "I cannot command Caesar and, despite our bond, I suspect he intends to give you as a peace offering to Antonious and Zoticus. I shall speak with him directly and plead that you be spared that agony but I cannot be sure of my being able to dissuade him."

"Thank you Germanicus," said Gaius as he knelt to kiss my hand.
